California Run

General Notes

The California Run is a 2,000 mile driving event that covers 3 states and 3 of the world’s greatest cities in 1 week. A confirmed entry includes the hire of a Ford Mustang.

IT IS NOT A RACE, RALLY OR TIME TRIAL. There are no time constraints or destination arrival deadlines. It is intended primarily to be a fun, social driving experience where like minded petrolheads can get away from it all by driving, dining and telling eachother far fetched stories about their cars, their daily exploits and past adventures and encounters. And a casual dress code!

Note couples are welcome and are expected to make up 70% of all attendees on this event.

The Price

£3,900 (£1,950 per person) based on 2 drivers sharing accommodation (£3,800 for CD Tour returnees). The price for US residents or anybody not requiring flights is £2,900.

50% of the balance is due by Friday 18th November. The remaining 50% is due by Friday 6th January.

Itinerary

Sat 7 April (Heathrow - Los Angeles)
Event registration and participant introductions will take place at the Holiday Inn Heathrow Ariel. A private coach will then take us to the airport. Our direct midday flight arrives in Los Angeles at 2.20pm US West Coast Time, giving participants plenty of time to pick up their Mustangs from the airport prior to driving across the road to the Radisson LAX, a luxurious hotel situated within the airport complex. We will meet in the hotel bar for drinks, excited at the prospect of our 1st day of driving in the US of A!

Sun 8 April (Los Angeles - Route 66 - Flagstaff)
As with every day of the California Run, we will start very leisurely, meaning a giant American buffet breakfast followed by a steady 10 – 11am departure. Day 1 will likely be a culture shock due to the stark contrast of driving in the US Wild West compared to driving in Europe. The vastness and openness will soon become apparent as we leave Los Angeles. Once out of LA we will pick up the historic section of Route 66, where we will travel 400 miles through the Mojave Desert, all the way to Flagstaff in Arizona, stopping off occasionally at the many diners and gas stations dotted along the route that have remained unchanged since they were built in the 1950’s. In April the scenery will be spectacular, with desert wild flowers & cacti in full bloom. We will arrive in Flagstaff by late afternoon, giving drivers the chance to soak up the atmosphere of the American dream over a Miller or two in the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel, Flagstaff – the gateway to the Grand Canyon.

Mon 9 April (Grand Canyon)
Just the one thing on the agenda today – The Grand Canyon! Situated 80 miles away from Flagstaff, the world’s most famous National Park is within easy reach. We will arrive at the Canyon via the Desert View Drive, parking the Mustangs at Grand Canyon Village prior to setting off on foot on the Tanner Trail. There is also an option to explore the Grand Canyon by helicopter. We will have the opportunity to stay after lunch and continue exploring this incredible natural wonder, prior to returning to the Hilton to marvel at the epic experiences of the day over a few more Millers!

Tue 10 April (Flagstaff - Las Vegas)
Another great day planned – Vegas! Las Vegas is situated only 250 miles (a stunning 4 hour drive) from Flagstaff, meaning we can once again set off very leisurely – there will be no rush as we cruise serenely through more sections of the Mojave and Route 66, crossing into Nevada, checking out the Hoover Dam and finally on to Las Vegas. Arriving early afternoon, all participants will get almost a full day (and night) at Vegas, giving us plenty of time to tour the famous strip and spend a few dollars in the Casinos. Speaking of Casinos, it is worth noting that we will be staying at the 3,000 room, 5* Mirage – which also houses one of the largest Casinos in Vegas - awesome!

Wed 11 April (Las Vegas - Death Valley - San Francisco)
The longest driving day of the event will also see us drive the best roads in the whole of North America. We will drive out of Nevada, crossing into California. Here we will experience the driest, hottest and lowest part of North America – Death Valley – a stunning location situated 300 feet below sea level. The temperature regularly exceeds 120 deg. F, with the highest on record being 134 deg. F. We will drive past, incredibly only 60 miles further west, the breathtaking Mount Whitney, the highest point in the US at 14,500 feet above sea level. We will then continue north, crossing the undulating Sierra Nevada Mountains, arriving early evening at San Francisco, where we will be staying at one of the finest hotels in the city, the magnificent 5* Fairmont.

Thu 12 April (San Francisco)
No driving today. We will all get the opportunity to rest at the hotel & use the spa facilities; check the oil & water on the ‘Stangs; and tour the fantastic city of San Francisco. Viewing the Golden Gate Bridge is a must, as is a tour of Alcatraz – which is still open to the public. A fine day where we can all re charge our batteries will precede a group visit to San Francisco – by night! We will once again be staying at the Fairmont.

Fri 13 April (San Francisco - Pacific Coast Highway - Los Angeles)
Return leg of the journey – San Francisco to Los Angeles via the Gold Coast Road – the Pacific Coast Highway. This leg will see us drive some of the most scenic, spectacular and rewarding coastal roads to be found anywhere in the world, as we wind up and down the incredible Diablo and Santa Lucia Mountain Ranges, with the Pacific Ocean always just to our right. We will arrive back at the Radisson LAX by late afternoon, re-checking in before heading into Beverley Hills for a few margaritas!

Sat 14 April (Los Angeles - Heathrow - Home)
An 8pm flight means we can spend the day in LA / Hollywood / Beverley Hills. We will arrive at Heathrow 2pm on Sunday the 15th, after what will almost certainly be the most exhilarating driving adventure ever experienced.
